India, My Soul Food & Stark Reminder...🙌
😬 Late update, I know! Apologies, but trust me, it's worth it...🇮🇳
By sharing my journey here, it's not just about my business; it's about revealing the magic of India, a place that has captured my soul. Rajasthan, especially, holds a special place in my heart, though I know this vast country has so much more to offer. This corner of Rajasthan is a vibrant melting pot, drawing pilgrims, yogis, and entrepreneurs to its holy lake and small-town manufacturers. I'm a country girl at heart, and while Southern India was breathtaking, it's here that I truly fell in love.
I witness the farmers tending their small plots, hand-digging trenches to conserve precious water – a stark reminder of the simple, sustainable practices we've lost in most due to our Corporate supermarkets in the UK along with our utility-laden lives. Even the simple act of hand-washing my clothes in the shower after a long day is therapeutic, a grounding ritual in this dry, mountain-kissed climate.
I am fully aware our UK farmers have been systematically oppressed for decades; without them, back in WWII, the outcome may well have been different. Being here takes me back to my childhood on my grandparents' 100-acre dairy and arable farm, where my grandmother bought their first cow with their wedding money. Twice my Grandparents won the Best 100 Acre Farm in the UK, True! She was a very hard-working honest woman, as are all of my family, with true rooted values. Our big supermarkets in the UK, with aisles of choice governed by the price point, truly makes me sad, and who benefits? I ask & pray one day the UK Government & the World for that matter comes to it's senses, Ego, Power & Wealth won't keep us alive! One must have faith.. 🙏
The kindness of the Hindu and Sikh people is palpable. Their philosophy, rooted in honouring the Mother Goddess and caring for elders, resonates deeply. Perhaps it's the “Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” effect, but I feel a vibrant positivity and a genuine willingness to please. A prime example I wore out a pair of £2.50 sandals I bought, usually at home I would throw them in the bin, no, not here, my Leather Factory saw me walk in with broken sandals & a staff member hopped on his scooty & returned 5 minutes later with them fully repaired by a little man near the 'bus stand' repaired for pennies... his income... & my sandals better than when they were new... aboslutely amazing how resilient this nation is to survive & support each other.
My work here isn't just work; it's soul food. I'm blessed to have forged connections with family factories and local “wallas” for my boutique. Now, amidst the whirlwind of Recycled leather dreams (vibrant cabin cases, luxe travel sets!), versatile clothing drops (Ascot glam meets beach vibes!), dreamy cotton bedding, and quirky brass padlocks (fish ones!), I'm also boxing and shipping these handcrafted treasures home.
As I prepare for my return, I'll compile an album of snapshots – raw, real moments that warmed my heart or sparked laughter. Laughter, after all, is the best medicine. I smile, and they smile back, sometimes surprised by a foreigner's acknowledgment. In a world often clouded by power and greed, India reminds me that love is the true currency.
This poignant post, as my business trip nears its end, is a testament to the magic I've found here. Bear with me as I box and ship these special pieces, each carrying a piece of India's soul, ready to bring a touch of its warmth and vibrancy to you. Get ready for the Christchurch shop re-opening, the Three Lions stunner, and Ringwood’s artisan buzz. May's coming, and we're bringing India with us!
